DESCRIPTION: Primarily located along leaf veins or on leaf blades these mite induced galls are knobbly in appearance and start out green before turning red and finally black with age. They reach a height of up to 5mm and are usually found in high numbers. An opening is found on the underside of each gall. The mites overwinter under the bark of the Silver Maple before moving to new leaves in the spring to begin feeding and causing a new batch of galls to form. DISTRIBUTION: Frequent throughout Britain and perhaps spreading. HABITAT: On the upperside of leaves on Silver Maple. |
